Rise With Us
From the streets of New York to the farms of Mississippi to the countryside of Brazil, people are paving the way for change. “We really need to be sending a really powerful message to governments. We need climate action now.” - Teresa Anderson, Climate Policy Coordinator, ActionAid “First, it is necessary that the government recognize that they exist, that the communities... the woods, the mountains, are not an immense emptiness.” - Altamiran Ribeiro, Pastoral Land Commission of the Catholic Church, Piauí, Brazil Altamiran is working with communities in Piauí, Brazil, to defend their land and water from U.S. and European corporate interests. We traveled with him to Mississippi where the same corporate interests are buying up land and where he met with Black farmers who are also fighting for their land. “I see two similarities right away. The first is the loss of people's lands, because of space taken up by investments that come there. Another similarity that I see between Piauí and Mississippi is the form of resistance that people seek.” - Altamiran Ribeiro Communities in Piauí are organizing to fight corporate land grabs and deforestation and raising their voices in the halls of power. It’s the same spirit rising up in the climate movement as young people are calling out corporations for fueling the climate crisis. “We're here to really be in solidarity with the youth that are really leading a movement to ensure that they have a just and a livable future, because the adults around the world are failing to live up to what's needed to solve the climate crisis.” - Brandon Wu, Director of Policy & Campaigns, ActionAid “Collective action can help all of us to get there. We should never feel like we're alone. We will be able to get there and make that dream real.” - Altamiran Ribeiro RISE WITH US Text ACTIONAID to 44-321 -- Video editing: Becca Haydu Photography and Video/ActionAid Footage: Rebecca Haydu; Andrew Welch
5 Ways We Acted Bold This Year
What does bold look like? Here are 5 ways ActionAid took bold action with people on the frontlines of poverty and injustice: 1) Through our women-led response to Cyclone Idai, we connected over 9,000 people with food, clothing, and hygiene kits. 2) We supported farmers in Haiti to win a historic land rights victory against a U.S.-funded project that pushed them off their land. 3) We pushed for the first-ever international law to end violence and harassment in the workplace. 4) With Brazilian land rights defender Altamiran Ribeiro, we delivered 38,780 signatures calling on pension fund TIAA to stop land grabbing. 5) We marched with 6 million people around the world to tell world leaders to fight climate change. Thanks to you, all of this is possible.
